Encaustic art work is so much fun!  I make really unique frames for the pieces when they are done too.  I use bees wax and oil paints, and found things or treasures and images.  It really stretches the creative process.  I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.

Encaustic Painting

To create an encastic painting, you require clarrified bees wax.  Yes, bees wax.  This technique had been used  as long ago as 800BC.  You can mix variouss colours of oil paints into the hot wax and use colours as well as the honey coloured wax itself.  It reequires heat with each layer as you build up your images in order to seal and bond the wax to the surface.  Wood is often the base but some other surfaces will work as well.  You can implant images and objects and colours galore to create a fascinating piece of artwork.
