Painting a grisaille is a wonderful way to learn to look at your subject.  It teaches you to see the tiniest variations in shade of a colour.

About the Images

Grisaille is a French term.  It comes from the word 'gris' meaning gray.  When I create a grisaille I basically use one colour and white.  I create a value scale to give me the whole range of possible shades of the one colour I chose. I have to look carefully and be aware of every nuance of the scene.  The finished product is very rewarding.

As an artist, I continue to learn more about the depth and detail of each scene  I create.
